Stories of Change

Kitui DU:  For the past 6 years I have lived in community with Sr. Bernadette.  I observe her as a very capable lady: outgoing, hardworking and especially when dealing with less fortunate of society, women and children.  Two years ago she started the course of Women Peacemakers – “Wanawake Wa Amani (WWA).  Each time on her return she is full of ideas.  She shares the topic with the community and tries to put it into practice. Now she has more courage to speak of Justice and Peace at all costs, for the less fortunate in Nuu and the surrounding areas.  After the 4th workshop, she shared with the community the “Employment Act 2007”.  She also invited Richard Kakeeto to share the same information with the AOSK Kitui District Unit; his presentation on the Employment Act 2007 was very informative.  Sr. Bernadette has gained a lot of the training and it is my hope and wish that she will continue to use her skills for the good of our people. “Thanks a lot Sr. Masicha, I owe my appreciation to you for introducing me to Edith. She is really conversant with the Act and I am proud that she is a Woman. Everyone who attended have something very positive to say about Edith’s Presentation. My Direct is so impressed with the organization of IWD this year. We have been organizing IWD as Women here for the last 10 years, but this was the first time I approached my Director, for me to be able to invite a resource person from out. I have earned myself an award for being the Best Employee of the Year in Community Work for the last two year and this has really motivated me this year.

The token you also give to us has also done a lot in my District Unit. On Saturday 5th, Narok deanery celebrated at Kilgoris Parish, with Mary Gatheru and Eva having organized. Last Saturday 12/03/11, we celebrated as Ngong Deanery (12 Parishes) at Rongai Parish (Our Lady of Fatima station). I also got a resource person – a Teacher/Counselor (Director of our Bulbul Counseling Centre) – Mrs. Terry Kagucia and one of our CWA leaders in my Parish. She presented on “Who is a Woman?” This came out so well. Over 700 Women attended. I gave out some of the token from you for facilitation these two days of our DU and the days were good, ending with Mass at 3.00 p.m.

Last Tuesday 15th we Celebrated at National Museums Headquarters with Hon. Martha Karua as a resource person with about 300 men and women in attendance. I was given a Nissan from here to ferry the Ladies who went with me. I would say this year was a real success in celebrating the Centenary. (Mary Waithaka – WWA 4 – March 18, 2011)
